September 21st is the International Day of Peace each year, and I wanted to tie a lesson to that topic. In each grade 3-8, we talked about Peace in our world and the importance of observing days such as this one. We also talked about how the origami crane has become a symbol of peace in our world, and read a news article from www.youngzine.org on the history of this symbol. Origami is the art of decorative Japanese paper folding, and so grades 5-8 spent class time folding the origami cranes. The students are all very proud of their hard work - as they should be! Kindergarten kids are in the middle of creating their own collage animals done in the style of Eric Carle's illustrations. They each had the option of creating a lion, a chameleon, or an owl. Next week we will be cutting and pasting our collages back together!
Grades 1-3 spent time learning about Impressionism as an artistic style. We talked about the characteristics which can be found in impressionistic paintings such as texture, color, value, shape, and line. We either begun this week, or will begin in the next couple of weeks, Impressionism projects in each of these grades.
